Recognised Festivals

The organisations listed below have their own lists of recognised, qualifying, or partner festivals. Please note, these may change without notice.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars)

To be eligable for The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ‘Animated Short Film Award’, your film must fit certain criteria (see Academy’s Awards Rules and Eligibility) OR “The film must have won a qualifying award at a competitive film festival, as specified in the Academy Festival List.”

You can download the Academy’s Short Films Qualifying List here.

British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)

Films entered into the British Short Film category must qualify via BAFTA’s qualifying festivals; however, animations do not need to screen at a qualifying festival. Animated short films first shown on television or an online broadcast platform may be accepted for entry for the Film Awards if they have been screened at either a recognised animation festival or a film
institution.

Animations that are intended for children can be entered for both the British Short Animation category and any relevant eligible categories for the Children’s Awards.

You can download BAFTA’s Short Films Qualifying List here.

European Film Academy

The short film selection and nomination procedure is organised by the European Film Academy and EFA Productions in co-operation with a series of film festivals throughout Europe. At each of these festivals, an independent jury presents one of the European short films in competition with a candidacy in the short film category of the European Film Awards.

To be considered for a candidacy, a short film has to screen in competition at any of the participating festivals.

Emile Awards / European Animation Awards Association

The Emile Awards is an annual ceremony celebrating excellence and diversity in the European animation film industry, and are presented by the European Animation Awards Association.

Through its festival partners, The European Animation Awards Association is able to organize screenings and meetings throughout Europe at world famous animation events. Those events mainly consist of screenings of the winners and nominees from the previous edition.
